Graham Watts was raised in Guelph, Ontario, where he developed a deep fascination with art and nature from a young age. Inspired by his mother's passion for art, he devoted his early years to sketching and mastering photography, fueling his love for creative exploration. Over 25 years ago, seeking fresh inspiration and adventure, Graham made the decisive move to Vancouver, drawn by the breathtaking beauty of British Columbia.

Artistic Journey through British Columbia

Graham's journey on Canada's west coast began with a career in marketing, balancing corporate roles and entrepreneurship. His artistic exploration took root in photography, capturing the stunning landscapes of British Columbia. Driven by curiosity, Graham embraced oil painting as a new medium, teaching himself the intricacies of the craft. This creative evolution not only strengthened his bond with nature but also helped him refine a distinct style that merges realism with personal interpretation. His work reflects a deep understanding of the landscapes he loves, bringing the essence of nature into every piece.

Influences from Metro Vancouver and Whistler Regions

The dynamic contrasts of Metro Vancouver's urban life and the tranquil wilderness of the Whistler region have profoundly influenced Graham's work. In Vancouver, the vibrant cityscape, rich cultural diversity, and iconic landmarks provided fresh perspectives and subjects for his art. Meanwhile, the natural beauty of Whistler—with its towering mountains, serene lakes, and abundant wildlife—offered endless inspiration. These regions' colors, sounds, and atmospheres are vividly reflected in his oil on canvas pieces, showcasing his deep connection to the West Coast. Graham's ability to convey the spirit of these places has resonated with art lovers locally and internationally, leading to his work being sold across British Columbia, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Artist Statement

Creating art is my passion! Every time I face a blank canvas there is a rush of energy and excitement. It is not something I can express with words… but it is, always, the beginning of a new original creation. I hope when others view my work, the energy of these beautiful West Coast places leaps from the canvas. 

“I have a gift, it’s not that I paint particularly better than other people — I would never fool myself into believing that. Rather it’s that I’ve taught myself to be patient with my work and patience is a very important variable of success. I believe every detail is as important as the whole. Like every facet and detail of your life is built upon a strong foundation. I want to believe that this gift of patience has translated into the rest of my life… but I’m not sure I’m there yet.

I’m still just a masterpiece in the making.”

MY PAINTING PROCESS

Every painting begins with a search to capture the essence of a landscape. Landscapes hold the magic of life and sometimes it takes time to understand its powerful inner expression.

In preparation for a painting, Graham spends time in nature, exploring and studying the landscape. Experiencing firsthand the energy of a place, the scale, temperature, colours, lighting, textures and above it all, the feelings that arise within from this exposure.
